About

Portrait02I am a student midwife enrolled in the Master of Midwifery Program at the Midwives’ College of Utah. My Master’s Thesis Project involves writing a manual directed at health care professionals outlining the benefits to using water during labour to enhance the birth experience as well as to reduce the number of unnecessary interventions. I want to see every woman have the best birthing experience they possibly can.

 Values

Philosophy: I believe that pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period are sacred times in a woman’s life. They are moments and memories she will never experience again. They are times of joy and celebration and must be supported and treated as such. The best way to achieve the most satisfying experience is through wholesome support from family, friends, and caregivers.

Current Mode of Practice: I want to see every woman have the best experience possible during labour and birth. This means she must have access to all forms of comfort during this time. Currently, there is one tub available to women in each hospital in Calgary. This is ONE TUB PER HOSPITAL! This is unacceptable. Women who feel that warm water immersion could help them get through their labour without using pharmaceutical pain relief should have access to this at all times throughout their labour.

Birth of the Future: My goal is to see women enjoying warm water immersion during labour and birth at all times. Hospitals will recognize the importance of this method of support and take the appropriate actions to ensure every woman has access to a tub during their labour and birth.

Calling all Women!: With more families demanding a natural approach to childbirth, we should be seeing a change in the attitudes of our health care providers. It takes just a few people to start the ball rolling. This is one step towards making a difference in the lives of women, their families, and ultimately our society. This can only lead to healthier, happier people!
